A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian works. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
